What is a Japanese IP address?
An IP address is the network address used to send internet traffic back to your connection. Websites generally see your public IP. A Japanese IP is one that location databases associate with Japan; those databases can disagree or lag behind changes.
Why use one while abroad?
Travelers, expats and Japanese learners may want to use Japanese websites, research local services or access media they are entitled to use. Streaming services also consider their own regional rules. A Japanese address alone does not establish access to a particular program.
How a VPN changes the apparent location
A VPN carries your traffic to its endpoint before it reaches the destination. When routed through JapanVPN’s Tokyo endpoint, websites see that endpoint’s Japanese public IP rather than your ordinary connection’s IP.
Connect with JapanVPN
- Review plans and eligibility, then create or sign into your account if you choose JapanVPN.
- Follow the current client installation instructions for your supported device.
- Connect to Japan and wait for the client to report connected.
- Use an independent public-IP location checker and confirm Japan. You do not need to share the address publicly.
- Open your intended website. For media, check streaming compatibility and the provider’s rules.
If the lookup still shows your ordinary location, reconnect once and contact support if it persists. A streaming rejection after a Japanese lookup can be a separate compatibility problem.
Privacy and security limits
The VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the endpoint. Keep using HTTPS, software updates and secure account passwords. Websites can still recognize logins, cookies and device signals; a VPN does not make you anonymous or protect a compromised device.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Japanese IP make every Japanese streaming service work?
No. Services can reject VPN connections and impose account, payment, title and device restrictions. Check the service guide and current compatibility results.
Does a VPN make me anonymous?
No. A VPN changes your apparent public IP and encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN endpoint. Accounts, cookies and other identifiers can still identify you.
Do I need to change my device language?
A Japanese IP describes network location, not language. Changing the language does not establish a Japanese IP or streaming eligibility.
